For fiddler 59, you said in a comment to put the C on the bass side closest to the scroll. When I got my fiddle from Barry he had take your advice, but I screws with my head when I am tuning my fiddle(not in sequence) What is the advantage of having the C on the bass side at the top.

I changed my user name in honor of my fiddle, to be cool like the rest of you guys. Does anyone have feedback on the placement of the C. Thanks

Not a biggie !! The only reason for putting the string on that peg is if you want to try some viola C-strings. I use a Spirocore viola C-string and and in using one it is necessary to put the C-string on that peg. If you are using the Helicore 5-string set you can certainly change the strings around so the C string is on the bottom peg (the peg closest to the nut on the bass side of the fiddle).

I use Prims on my 4 string and have been very pleased with them, does anyone know how they sound on a 5 string? Would I have to get a Viola C, or do they make a 5 string set? Helicores came on my 5 string, should I stick with them?

When I bought my Silakowski it was strung with the C on the upper peg. I guess it's because the viola strings are longer and require more tension to keep them stable and in tune. I've tried Prims on one of mine but didn't care for them on that fiddle. I've been happy with the Helicores (heavy).

Don't the heavy guage strings along with the added C put alot of tension on the neck?

Your 5 string will take it. I routinely put Helicore heavies on them when I make them.

I don't think so. I would think what they call 'heavy' guage strings are made within acceptable tension ranges so that they won't cause any harm to an instrument. Right now I have heavy EADG strings and a medium viola C string. They feel fine or normal to me and seem to respond well to the bow. I think the instruments nowadays are built to withstand any of the available guages.

That is good enough for me. The Helicore heavies on my fiddle sound great, I guess I'll stick with them.
