I am looking for input from players/makers on the string spacing for 5 string violins. After many years of being asked if I build 5 string violins, I'm finally going to build one. I will be posting the progress on my website Proviolins.com . It is my objective to keep the feel of a 4 string violin as close as possible. I will use a Strad model violin as a starting point. I have been getting a wonderful G string with this model and hope that will translate into a strong C string. I am making the ribs an additional 3mm deeper. I appreciate any feedback.
I think it's great you will be making a 5 string. The instruments on your web page look fabulous. Have you considered using your 15" viola pattern as a basis for this model. Just curious as I am more of viola 5 string performer instead of the violin. It might help with the C string considerably. Anyway, good luck with it and definately keep us posted!
Thanks for your kind comments. The 15 inch viola is an option if the C doesn't work out on the Strad model violin. I have high hopes because the G sounds so good with the archings and graduations I have been using. I will post the results here in a few weeks. On we go.... Jon
I for one prefer not compromising regular violin string spacing in order to make the neck a little narrower. I may be in the minority with this opinion. Over the years I attempted to use several five strings with compromised string spacing but in the end, I always went back to a four string over this single issue. Both my Dahlia and Wronski fiddles have uncompromised string spacing.
