Barry - Wonderful job at least judging by the photos. I really would like to try one of your instruments one of these days. I really like your f hole design too. Distinctive and original. I bet it sounds great! Congratualations on another fine instrument. Paul P.S. Do you do any fiddle conventions or gatherings where you display your wares?
This last year I went to the Magnolia Festival in Live Oak, FL. What a great time that was! I am going to try and do more shows this year. The only problem (or maybe not) is that I have a waiting list and do not have any instruments to take to any festivals. Darol Anger invited me to come to a show he had at Wolftrap and I had 2 of my five strings that I had just completed and was able to take those with me for Darol and several other super talents to try before they were sent off to there new owners. I don't really want to give out prices here but if you go to my web site or email me I'll be glad to provide you with any information you would like.
Stradibarrius do you tune the body to a certain resonance? I was wondering because of a discussion I had with a luthier who says that you will never have as good a tone from the E-string as with a violin, cause the bigger body ives a lover resonance which is not good
berg, I do not tune to a specific pitch or body resonance. I think the people who have played my 5-strings or the 5-strings that John Silakowski has made would disagree with the person that gave you that bit of wisdom. In fact when Darol Anger played one of my 5-strings, he specifically made mention about how nice and powerful the "E" was. Darol liked the sound enough that I am in the process of making a 5-sting for him.
Also keep in mind that perception of sound is very subjective.
E,A,D& G are all 10m/m...G to C is 11m/m. I always get comments about how the neck and playability/action. Here is a shot of the nut. 5m/m to answer the question.
I am not a professional musician but I do have a good ear for quality.Barry's violins are amazing. I have played five of them, and the depth and resonance of the C without loosing any brightness of the E is what hooked me.I tried the cheaper route, but they were to violish and the necks were "clunky" feeling. My Dudley is on the workbench right along side Darol Anger's.
