I'm new here! Happy Holidays, everyone. Has anyone played an Arthur Connor [may be spelled Conner] 5 string? I'm looking for comments on how it would compare with the others out there: Dahlia, Silakowski, Cooper etc. Mr. Connor is Kentucky builder, who makes both 4 and 5 strings. I've seen them for sale in the $2000 range.

    Thanks. -- Sheryl

I've got an Arthur Conner five-string he made for me in 1999. He was living in Copper Hill, VA at the time and was 75 years old. As far as I know, he's still there. Gene Elders has one of his, and in fact, Gene gave me his contact info. I loved the sound of Gene's five string. I hear him play it at the Kerrville Folk Festival and I've seen videos of him with George Strait on CMT.

Anyway, I love mine! I recorded with it when it was only two months old and I'm quite happy with the results of that session! As for comparison, I couldn't help you. My pockets aren't deep enough to have tried many others. However, I used to use my Zeta Strados five-string electric until I got the Conner violin. I now use a "Pick Up the World" pickup under the bridge and a Barcus-Berry preamp that must be thirty years old.

What strings are you using on your Conner? The original Xyex brand that Mr. Conner puts on, or have you changed to a different make?

The body is the same size as a regular fiddle.
